World Book Day Article

This year, 1st March 2018, World Book Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at St Edmund Arrowsmith. We interviewed people on this day to gain a variety of responses, this included a year 7 English class and various students. We gained a variety of responses, one from Rachel in year 10 who says `I like buying my books as I can spill hot chocolate on my own book!`

We also visited a year 7 class, where they were reading the next instalment of a story called `The Man with the Yellow Face`. We asked a variety of questions to the budding writers and readers of year 7 and they felt this story was a real page-turner. The story is based around a yellow-faced man who appears in a boy’s photo - will this mysterious figure try to chase the boy home to London? We asked their predictions. One said that they believed he was in a dream, as such events couldn’t be possible. Some believe the train that the boy takes to get home crashes in the end, leaving him no way to get to London. In the end the whole class thought the story was quite interesting.

In the library, while the book fair was on in school, we interviewed several people. We asked them various questions about their favourite books and the first books that they read. It was a mix-and-match from all people, from mystery to comedy and fantasy to fiction but one genre was a definite favourite from the majority - horror, with comedy coming second. One person, was a great `The Gruffalo` enthusiast, as this was his first book, latest book and favourite genre, even though we don’t know how that works in the first place!

We asked why people enjoyed this day, and people tended to say they liked the fact you could get books cheaper than in the shops, use book tokens and see other people dress up.

All in all, World Book Day is a fantastic event, everyone gets involved, including the teachers, one of whom was Mr McGreevy who dressed up as Sirius Black. This day is a great way of getting everyone into reading.
